Dunkin' Donuts Commits 100% Cage-Free Eggs by 2025
100% cage-free eggs by 2025
International doughnut giant Dunkin‘ Donuts will only use cage-free eggs by 2025. The announcement was made by Inspire Brands, the owner of Dunkin’ Donuts, Baskin-Robbins and Arby’s, in an updated sustainability policy about its famous brands.
“Globally, Inspire has committed to 100% sourcing of cage-free eggs across all brands by the end of 2025. Among the brands, Arby’s completed its transition to cage-free eggs in 2020. Dunkin’ Donuts and Sonic are continuing to make positive progress in their sourcing of cage-free eggs,” Inspire said.
Dunkin’ has more than 11,300 sites around the world. With eggs being used for over 8,500 restaurants in 41 states across the US alone, Dunkin’ Donuts new policy will significantly affect the egg industry, encouraging more brands to move away from the caged system.
The non-profit animal Lever Foundation welcomed the news. "Ten of the world's 25 largest fast food chains have now pledged that they will not source caged eggs anywhere in their global supply chains, including throughout Asia," it said in a statement.
Brands switch to cage-free eggs
In the last five years, the number of global brands with a global cage-free commitment has swelled to at least 37, including Unilever, Nestlé and McDonald’s. At the end of this year, producing “cage-free” will be mandated by law for companies that sell eggs in the US states of California, Oregon, Rhode Island, Washington and Michigan.
US chains that have committed to go entirely cage-free by 2025:
- Burger King
- Walmart US
- Kraft Heinz
