Garnacha aka Grenache is a globe trotter but has found a happy home around the northern Mediterranean Sea, especially in Spain. This heat-loving grape variety is late-ripening and clocks up generous alcohol levels unveiling body and spice. Translucent in colour, it is deceptively powerful with plush notes of ripe plums and strawberry jam, often revealing a hint of cinnamon and sweet tobacco. Garnacha forms a quintessential partner to Tempranillo in blends from Rioja and rules supreme in wines from Priorat. Here is Falstaff’s selection of the best.
