The 40 by 60 kilometer island in the Indian Ocean belongs to the Mascarenes. The brilliant white beaches are fringed by one of the world's largest coral reefs and shelter snorkeling enthusiasts and many species of fish from the open sea. Mauritius' volcanic origins make for picturesque inland hills covered by lush rainforests. Fertile soils allow for the cultivation of a variety of local produce on site.
