US Passports Soon to Include a Third Gender Marker Option

On June 30, the U.S. State Department announced a planned policy change for a third gender option on passports. Citizens will be able to select their gender on passports, without the need for medical certification.

On Wednesday, June 30, secretary of state Antony Blinken stated that the department has begun the process of adding a third gender marker for non-binary, intersex, and gender non-conforming people. He said the department will work closely with other agencies "to ensure as smooth a travel experience as possible for the passport holder," and "The process of adding a gender marker for non-binary, intersex, and gender non-conforming persons to these documents is complex and will take time." The change will apply to both existing passport holders and new applicants.
