The term “peated” simply means “peated” in German. Peated whiskeys are those in which the barley has been dried over peat smoke. During “drying,” as this process is called, elements of the burned peat stick to the grain and are reflected in the end result. Typical peated single malts have between 30 and 50 ppm (phenol parts per million). This is an indication of the phenol content in the barley.
