ISLE OF MAN: FROM ROLE MODEL TO LOCKDOWN

Corona Falls on the island again.

Just a few days ago, the whole of Europe was looking longingly towards the Isle of Man. The reason: the island was the only area in Europe to live entirely without coronavirus measures and slowly began to return to life before the pandemic. pandemic to get used to. But in the blink of an eye, everything changed. Suddenly, active Covid cases were registered again.

Back in the lockdown

After a corona-free phase on the Isle of Man, the virus struck again. Numerous new Covid cases were reported within a few hours. The kingdom reacted quickly and announced another - this time the third - lockdown. Schools, non-essential businesses and service providers had to close again. Pubs and restaurants, which were finally looking forward to full rooms and an exuberant atmosphere again, are now only allowed to offer food to go. This was also confirmed by the Government of the Crown Estate in the Irish Sea.

Instead of strolling through the city and enjoying the spring air, it's back to social distancing rules and compulsory masks. As a first step, these measures will apply for three weeks from March 3 and will be reviewed on an ongoing basis.

The island as a model

So far, the island has coped relatively well with the pandemic. Less than 800 coronavirus cases, 25 of which were fatal, show that the coronavirus measures in the kingdom have borne fruit. Entry regulations to the kingdom are also very strict. As a result, the island, which has a population of around 85,000, ended all coronavirus-related measures on February 1, 2021, allowing the islanders to lead a largely normal life again. Fun pub evenings with friends, an exclusive dinner in a restaurant, sports in a gym: still sounds pretty utopian to us. On the Isle of Man, this was back to everyday life.

But the joy didn't last long. Just one month later, a ferry crew brought around 40 acute coronavirus cases to the island. Gradually, the numbers rose again, even in an environment not related to the ferry. The only logical consequence for the government: to bring the outbreak under control, the island between Great Britain and Northern Ireland goes back into lockdown.
