On the heels of Game of Thrones, The Crown & Co.
At the moment, we tend to reminisce about past vacations and spend a lot of time watching series instead of planning our next trip. But we still don't have to miss out on the vacation feeling! After all, most series that bring a little distraction to stressful everyday life are filmed in fantastic locations that are not that far away. For example, in beautiful Croatia, the spectacular Highlands of Scotland or urban Berlin.
Click here are five places in Europewhere cult series were filmed and which are perfect as the next holiday destination - or simply to soothe wanderlust.
Dubrovnik & Split, Croatia: "Game of Thrones"
Croatia has long been one of the most popular vacation destinations in Europe. But at the latest since the cult series "Game of Thrones" gained a foothold there, the land of a thousand islands has also become known worldwide. The fictitious town of Königsmund is actually located in Dubrovnik. The old town in particular, which is known for its imposing city walls, is often shown in the series. Another filming location in the city is the Lovrijenac Fortress, located directly on the coast and surrounded by high cliffs. The "Game of Thrones" production relocated its filming to the Krka National Park for numerous exterior shots. And some scenes from the famous series were also filmed on Split. For example in Diocletian's Palace, which is around 1,700 years old and was the scene of some bloody slave fights.
Aberdeenshire, Scotland: "The Crown"
"The Crown" has now become a cult series. This is because it reflects the life of Queen Elizabeth II and the British royal family. The filming locations include London, the South of England and the Scottish Highlands. Balmoral Castle in the north of Scotland in particular, which is also the Queen's summer residence, often features in the series. The Scottish baronial-style castle has already been the setting for "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen", "Outlander" and the latest James Bond movie "No Time to Die". Some scenes were also filmed at the Ardverikie Estate, a 19th century property near Newtonmore in Scotland.
Berlin, Germany: "Homeland"
The dark agent series "Homeland" has already seen several continents. Including Europe. This is because some of the filming for the fifth season was relocated to Berlin without further ado. Studio Babelsberg and the German capital Berlin became the setting for the series, which revolves around CIA analyst Carrie Mathison and war returnee Nicholas Brody. The producers used Mauerstraße in Berlin-Mitte in particular as a location and transformed it into a "Baghdad Green Zone". But the Brandenburg Gate, Alexanderplatz and Berlin Central Station also play a major role in the series.
Bath & London, England: "Bridgerton"
The Netflix series "Bridgerton" took international hearts by storm. The story is set in the Regency era in England and is based on the novels by Julia Quinn. The idyllic locations make you want to explore the breathtakingly beautiful areas of the country. Such as Bath, in the southwest of England. Founded by the Romans, the city was a vibrant social center in 1800 and is now considered a special jewel of the Regency style. The Royal Crescent in particular - in the series the home of the wealthy Featherington family, in reality a luxury hotel and museum - is one of the most frequent filming locations in "Bridgerton". The London district of Richmond, which lies directly on the banks of the Thames, also serves as the setting. This is where Hampton Court Palace is located - the opulent residence of the fictional Queen Charlotte.
Madrid, Spain: "House of Money"
Madrid has experienced a new boom since the successful series "House of Money" was broadcast. This is because the Spanish capital is the flagship of the crook series. First the Spanish banknote printing plant comes into focus, then the central bank is the main setting. And smaller locations around Madrid, such as Torrelodones, where the finca "El Gasco" is located, which served as a training ground for the budding robbers in the first two seasons. A central location in season three is a supposed Italian monastery, where the professor presents his team with plans for another robbery. However, the Ermita de San Frutos monastery is not located in Italy, but in Segovia, Spain. However, the interior shots of the imposing building were filmed in a farm near the monastery.
