The "Not Hot List 2026" from Intrepid Travel shows the most unpopular travel destinations. All the more reason to explore them and leave the beaten tourist track.

If you've had enough of crowded sights, the "Not Hot List 2026" from tour operator Intrepid Travel provides inspiration for a vacation away from the mainstream. Instead of encountering streams of tourists, places that are authentic, quiet and surprisingly diverse are tempting. Four insider tips are located in Europe.

Nature, culture and culinary delights off the beaten track

"80 percent of travelers visit only ten percent of the world's tourist destinations. We want to show that there is much more to discover - places that are open to visitors and can benefit from them," explains the organizer. The list combines natural wonders, cultural experiences and culinary adventures, from the stars of the Great Basin National Park in Nevada, USA, to the colorful alleyways of Ruta de las Flores in El Salvador. Falstaff TRAVEL presents the most beautiful and unpopular places.

1. Tiwai Island, Sierra Leone

A tropical paradise in the middle of the Moa River: rainforest, rare monkey species and colorful birds make Tiwai an Eldorado for nature lovers. Comfort is minimal, but the seclusion is impressive. Boat trips, eco-lodges and encounters with village cultures make for an authentic experience.

2. the Tian Shan Mountains, Kyrgyzstan

The "Heavenly Mountains" offer untouched peaks, turquoise lakes and secluded valleys. Multi-day hikes, overnight stays in yurts and ski tours in winter make the region a retreat for the adventurous.

3. Sierra Norte, Mexico

Just a few hours from Oaxaca, Sierra Norte beckons with cloud forests, waterfalls and traditional village communities. Visitors experience local culture up close, spend the night in rustic huts and learn about traditional crafts.

4th Vis, Croatia

The remote island off the Adriatic coast preserves an authentic Mediterranean lifestyle: fishing, viticulture and small tavernas characterize island life. Unlike Hvar, Vis is hardly overrun by tourists.

5 Gaziantep, Turkey

The culinary capital of Turkey impresses with baklava, kebabs and lively bazaars. In addition to culinary highlights, the Zeugma Mosaic Museum and historic caravan courtyards are also worth a visit. A destination for connoisseurs away from the mainstream.

6 Arunachal Pradesh, India

Dense rainforest, remote valleys and Buddhist monasteries make the north-east of India the "last great wilderness adventure". New accommodation and an airport in Itanagar are slowly opening up access for travelers.

7th Via Transilvanica, Romania

1400 kilometers of hiking trail through Transylvania, Bukovina and Banat combine nature, culture and authentic encounters. Guest houses, craft businesses and winegrowers offer insights into the real Romania, far removed from the Dracula clichés.

8th Ruta de las Flores, El Salvador

Colonial cities, colorful streets, coffee plantations and volcanoes await visitors. Few tourists venture into the highlands, which makes the route particularly charming.

9th Oulu, Finland

Just south of the Arctic Circle lies a young, creative city with direct access to nature. With festivals, the midnight sun and the Northern Lights, Oulu is a cultural and natural highlight.

10th Great Basin National Park, USA

Anyone who only associates Nevada with Las Vegas will be surprised here: ancient pines, glacier remains, limestone caves and the officially awarded Dark Sky Park make the park a stargazer's paradise - and that with only around 150,000 visitors per year.
