The Areni Tcheurny red wine variety is probably the oldest grape variety in Armenia and has its origins near the town of Areni, which also gave the variety its name, in the Vayots Dzor province in the south of the country. The oldest winery, dated to around 4000 BC, was also founded here. BC, excavated a few years ago. The Areni is considered the highest quality red wine variety in the country with decent ripening and aging potential. The thick-skinned berries, which form medium-sized to larger compact clusters, are moderately resistant to putrefactive diseases, but the Areni survives winter frosts excellently. It sprouts in the middle segment and ripens late. As a rule, Areni is made into a rich, dry and ageable wine, but some producers also make it semi-dry. It also serves as a basis for the production of brandy. Dry or semi-dry rosé wines are also produced in the east and south of the country. The wines are very difficult to obtain outside of Armenia. No other occurrences of this variety are known.
