The white wine variety Bellone is an indigenous variety from Italy. The name is derived from bello, the Italian word for beautiful or pretty. The grape variety was probably already described by Pliny the Elder in his work Naturalis historia.

The late-ripening variety is now only grown in Lazio on an area of approx. 2500 hectares (as of 1998).
