Debit

White grape variety

The name of the white wine varieties native to Dalmatia and the Republic of Macedonia is a curiosity. In the case of debit, the name roughly translates to “debt” or “debt collection.” What this means, however, is the high yields that this grape variety produces, which can put the winemaker in the pleasant position of having to repay or pay off debts. The origin of this variety lies in Croatia. A similar name can be found in Italy with the Pagadebit variety, but the two grape varieties have nothing in common. The Debit is very productive, ripens late and provides the winemaker with reliably lush harvests. Widespread across various wine-growing regions, the debit is in Dalmatia/Croatia. There are also smaller deposits in the Republic of Macedonia. It is often made as a pure variety, but can also complete a cuvée with power, alcohol and fruity concentration.
