Kraljevina

White grape variety

The Kraljevina can cause confusion simply because of its full name, Kraljevina Crevna. Kraljevina Crevna means something like "red kingdom", but it is actually a white wine variety. Depending on their orientation to the sun, the grape skins can take on a delicate rose-colored hue, which may have led to this name. It is often translated as "Red Portugieser", but in fact it is neither related to the Blue Portugieser nor to any variety from the Portugieser vine family. The Kraljevina comes from the Zagreb area in Croatia, where it is still widely distributed today. The variety sprouts late and also ripens late. Since the berries are relatively large and thin-skinned, the variety is susceptible to rot diseases such as black rot and sour rot, even more so when yields are increased. In Croatia, Kraljevina is usually made as a single variety and brings a fairly neutral but fresh wine to the glass for uncomplicated wine enjoyment. Outside Croatia, it is also found in Slovenia, where it is mostly used as an ingredient in the light red wine blend Cvi?ek. However, it is not more widespread.
