Limnio

Red grape variety

Limnio, not to be confused with Limniona, a grape variety preferably grown near Thessaloniki and not related to Limnio, is a long-established red wine variety in Greece. It probably came to the mainland from the island of Lemnos, where it is also known by its Turkish name Kalambaki. The Limnio produces generous yields and copes well with the warm climate of Greece, which is also very suitable for its late maturity, as it also tolerates water stress very well. However, it is susceptible to downy mildew and sour rot. The variety is widespread in northern Greece, but the vineyard area is declining. It has also been shown that the Limnio produces better results in the cooler climates of Macedonia and Thrace. The wines of Limnio generally have a high alcohol content with medium acidity and are often added to blends with Cabernet Sauvignon or Cabernet Franc because of their moderate tannin content. It is rarely produced as a pure variety. This variety is not found outside of Greece.
