The Muscat d'Alexandrie is one of the oldest known grape varieties and was once very common, especially in the Mediterranean region. The name suggests that the vine comes from Alexandria in Egypt, although this is an unsubstantiated hypothesis. Relatives to other grape varieties indicate that the grape variety comes from either southern Italy or Greece. It was first specifically mentioned in 1563, but under its name Zibibbo, which can still be found in Sicily today. The grape variety only appeared as Muscat d'Alexandrie in 1713. Today it is still widespread in the Mediterranean under a variety of names, although no longer to the same extent as before. Muscat d'Alexandrie tolerates heat well and hardly suffers from drought stress, which makes the grape variety perfect for warm regions. That's why Muscat is also widespread in Argentina and Chile. In Argentina he even supplied one of the parents for the now popular varieties Torrontes Riojana and Torrontes Sanjuanino, which are very similar in scent and taste. The Muscat can also be easily grown as a bush wine and produces large clusters with also large berries. It is susceptible to powdery mildew and sour rot, but it also sometimes suffers from insect damage. In France it is particularly well represented in Languedoc-Roussillon, where it is used to produce Vin Doux Naturel or fortified wines. In Italy, the variety can be found in Sicily, where it is also used for dry white wines. On the island of Pantelleria, an excellent sweet wine is made from it. Muscat is also well represented in Spain and Portugal, where dry and sweet wines are also made from it. Larger areas of cultivation are located in California, Argentina, Chile and Peru, where the brandy Pisco is produced from it. In Australia the wine is called Muscat Grodon Blanco and refers to the production of fortified wines in the sherry or port style.
