Although the name may suggest it: The Roter Veltliner has no relation to Austria's flagship white wine variety, the Grüner Veltliner, but was the most important crossing partner for the creation of the Neuburger, the Zierfandler and the Rotgipfler. Its exact origin and origin are still unclear. The late-ripening variety is particularly sensitive to winter and spring frosts and is susceptible to sour rot. Their returns are relatively high, but unfortunately incalculable. The most important Roter Veltliner wines come from almost 200 hectares, which are mainly located in the Kamptal, Kremstal, Wagram and Weinviertel, although Slovakia has the larger vineyard area at 350 hectares. When fully ripe, the Roter Veltliner produces full-bodied and harmonious wines even with higher yields, but when unripe the grape also brings peppery-grassy notes to the wine. Ideally, the Roter Veltliner can withstand a few years of bottle aging. Outside Austria and Slovakia there are still very few hectares in Hungary and the Czech Republic.
