A healthy snack taking the digital world by storm, the trendy energy balls have caused quite a stir.

Admittedly, "brownie balls" doesn't necessarily sound like a healthy snack. But they really are: They're simply a tasty variation of the well-known and popular energy balls. Whether this is due to Lent or the growing interest in healthier snack alternatives is hard to say. The fact is: brownie balls are quick to make, irresistible and in most cases even vegan, making them the ideal treat for anyone with a sweet tooth.

Brownie balls are so popular at the moment that a small debate has even broken out online about who actually came up with them originally – and who simply copied the idea. Can a sweet snack really cause such a kerfuffle? Apparently it can.

Have a ball

So what's behind the "new and improved" energy balls? Basically, brownie balls  are a simple but sophisticated combination of dates, nuts, ground almonds, cocoa powder and either agave or maple syrup – all easily available yet very healthy. Once these have been processed into a smooth mass, the recipe can be tweaked and refined as desired.

Whether you add a pinch of cinnamon, a little salt, freeze-dried raspberries or grated coconut – there are no limits to your creativity. Small wonder then, that brownie balls are the latest and greatest on social media. The online foodie community loves to reinterpret the snack time and again adding their own creative twists. And even if their origins are currently the object of contention, they're already an instant classic and ideal as a DIY gift for any occasion.
