Best city hotel

The Fontenay Hamburg, Hamburg

Opened in 2018, The Fontenay has become an integral part of Hamburg. This luxury hotel impresses with its location next to a sprawling park on the banks of the Outer Alster Lake, putting many of the city’s top sights and trendiest shops within walking distance. Surrounded by centuries-old trees, it offers an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life—a peaceful oasis of calm. Designed by star architect Jan Störmer, the entire property is a feast for the eyes, especially for design lovers. The spa is equally impressive: guests can unwind in the infinity pool while taking in breathtaking views, or relax with exceptional treatments. At Lakeside, Michelin-starred cuisine is served alongside sweeping views of the Alster.

Best design hotel

The Qvest hideaway, Cologne

Inside the neo-Gothic building in the heart of Cologne’s Old Town, tradition and modernity blend in perfect harmony. Behind the striking 1897 façade, guests discover soaring vaulted ceilings, original stucco, Gothic windows, modern photography, as well as contemporary art. The hotel features just 34 uniquely designed rooms and suites, each inspired by mid-century and vintage design and equipped with its own small library. Some rooms boast magnificent six-meter-high vaulted ceilings, while all embrace a minimalist aesthetic. Just steps away, you'll find top attractions like Cologne Cathedral and the Museum of Applied Arts, along with a wide array of cafés, bars, and restaurants.

Best gourmet hotel

Söl'ring Hof Rantum, Sylt

The location of Söl’ring Hof alone is enough to make anyone swoon: perched on a dune, it offers unobstructed views of the sea and the horizon. But that’s just the beginning. With only 15 rooms and suites, this intimate retreat leaves nothing to be desired—thanks to a passionate team that delivers exceptional hospitality day in and day out. One of them is Jan-Philipp Berner, who, along with his team, is behind the exquisite gourmet cuisine at the hotel’s two-star restaurant. Their dishes—rooted in Sylt’s culinary tradition yet never confined by it—are crafted with artistry, technical precision, and a deep understanding of flavor. The wine list is just as impressive!

Hotelier of the year

Frank Nagel

Frank Nagel began his career in the hospitality industry as a chef—and a very successful one at that. By the age of 30, after honing his craft across numerous countries, he had already earned his first Michelin star. His path eventually led him into hotel management, starting as managing director of the A-Rosa Resorts. About ten years ago, he joined Weissenhaus—drawn in part by the opportunity to work alongside his wife Natalie and to shape the resort freely, bringing the owner’s vision to life in creative ways. Guests have taken notice: today, Weissenhaus is recognized as a world-class destination, renowned for its award-winning spa, two-star cuisine, and impeccable service.

Best New Opening

Brunfels Hotel, Mainz

Only recently opened at the start of the year, this new hotel in Mainz has already gained a devoted following. And it’s easy to see why: inspired not only in name by the renowned Mainz-born botanist, the hotel also reflects his influence in its interior design. In the flower-themed lobby, for instance, the bar and restaurant blend so seamlessly that it feels more like relaxing in a stylish living room. Pastel-colored walls, fine wood, marble, and tasteful, partly handcrafted furnishings create a cozy Art Deco vibe. Special attention was paid to the culinary concept as well—locals and hotel guests alike should feel right at home in the restaurant. There's a great wine list and also local craft beer!

Lifework

Horst Schulze

Few individuals have shaped the hotel industry as profoundly as Horst Schulze. More than 65 years ago, he took his first steps in hospitality—as a busboy in a German town—embarking on a journey that would take him around the world and to the very top of the industry. Schulze first made a name for himself at Hilton and Hyatt before becoming a founding member of The Ritz-Carlton in 1983, where he played a pivotal role in establishing the service standards that guests still associate with the brand today—standards that continue to serve as a benchmark across the industry. Technically retired, the charismatic and highly decorated leader went on to launch the Capella Group, which he eventually sold in 2017.

Best spa hotel

The Birkenhof - Spa & Pleasure Resort, Neunburg vorm Walde

Surrounded by forests and meadows, the Birkenhof is a place where guests are pampered from head to toe—not just with exceptional cuisine, but also in the expansive spa. The water world features a variety of pools, including a saltwater pool and an onsen-style pool, as well as saunas and tranquil relaxation rooms. Kneipp basins, an ice fountain, experience showers, and even a waterfall add to the journey toward deep relaxation. For a shortcut to total bliss, experienced therapists are on hand with expert techniques to melt away stress and everyday worries. And if you don’t want to skip a workout while on vacation, the in-house gym offers plenty of space for personalized training sessions.

Best family hotel

The Grand Green Familux Resort, Oberhof

Anyone who’s traveled with family knows how many different needs can come into play. Fortunately, The Grand Green is a family hotel designed to meet every one of them. The rooms and suites offer cozy retreats—almost like little nests. A wide range of activities makes it easy to create lasting memories together, all set against the natural beauty of the Thuringian Forest. And when parents need a little me-time or kids are eager to make new friends and go on adventures, the doors to the Kids Club are wide open. The wellness offerings are just as extensive—with plenty of relaxing options for children, too.

Sustainability & innovation

Klosterhof - Alpine Hideaway & Spa, Bayerisch Gmain

Guests of the 500-year-old Klosterhof treasure not only its exclusive, secluded location on a sunny plateau surrounded by the natural beauty of the Berchtesgadener Land, but also the warm, family-like atmosphere greeting them from the very first moment. The thick monastery walls of the past have given way to architecture that masterfully blends tradition with contemporary design. Spacious lofts, suites, and rooms with whirlpools offer a stylish home away from home. Fine dining at the restaurant GenussArt and relaxing moments in the spa nourish the soul. And nature is smiling too— Klosterhof is the first hotel in Germany to receive the EU Ecolabel, awarded for its comprehensive and effective sustainability program.
