The Planalto Catarinense wine region produces about six percent of Brazil's wine and is located on the high plateau north of the Serra Gaúcha. The vineyards thrive between 900 and 1400 meters above sea level on basalt soils. The area is not irrigated ,and the harvest takes place between March and April.
