The history of this long-standing wine estate begins almost 800 years ago. Located in the Kremstal valley in Lower Austria, in the small village of Oberfucha, it is a place where viticulture has been deeply rooted in the landscape, and has been an integral part of this winegrowing family for 14 generations. Since 1988, its 23 hectares of vineyards have been farmed organically. In addition to avoiding the use of synthetic pesticides, the practice of organic farming on their vineyards has highlighted the protection and care of valuable landscapes and ecosystems in and around the vineyards.
True to the region and to the land, grape varieties Grüner Veltliner and Riesling form the core of the business. Manual care of the vines is a top priority in the vineyard and a core part the company's philosophy. Grape berries are hand-picked into small harvest boxes. Every single grape is carefully selected by hand. In the cellar, the primary goal is to maintain the quality of the fruit and the expression of the vineyards, as well as to preserve the uniqueness of the wines through deliberate "non-intervention" techniques.
Far removed from magic enzymes, fining catalogs and aromatic yeasts, the cellar tries to get by with as little intervention and technology as possible. With the idea that top wines are created in the vineyard, a hands-off approach is used in the cellar. Modern cellar technology including modern steel tanks, steam cleaners and renewable energy from photovoltaics sources allows for modern winemaking with hygienic advantages.
Bold, loud and opulent wines have never been Geyerhof's thing. These wines instead are characterised by their longevity and uniqueness. In times of regulations, laws and market pressures, wines can and should reflect the characteristics of the soil, the grape variety and the vintage. Sometimes rough and complex, sometimes light and carefree - each wine reflecting differences of vintage, life and the people themselves.
