Burgen, a village with 600 inhabitants, lies in an idyllic side valley of the Moselle, directly on the old course of the river. Alexander Häßler grows wine here on two hectares of vineyards spread over three sites: Burgener Hasenläufer, Kirchberg and Römerberg. "The long ripening phase on the sun-drenched steep slopes brings out the best in the subsoil," says the winemaker, who also produces an "orange" version of Riesling, which is pleasing with its ripe phenolics. The Pinot Noir with its finely extracted tannins and slate spiciness also shows format. Beautiful!

"I took over the winery in Burgen on the Moselle in 2015 as a career changer with just under one hectare of vines," Alexander Häßler writes to us. Since then, the new winemaker has been able to double the area and even acquire a plot in the Brauneberger Juffer. Not only this, but the wines also demonstrate his ambition and idea: together with oenologist Michael Acker, Häßler creates purist, mineral, emphatically light wines that dispense with "fruit salad" and exaggerated sweetness. The Pinot Noir is also very good: fine, delicate, subtle.
