It is certainly beautiful and fascinating to lead a winery into the elite of a country's wine producers, to establish it at the top and then to witness how it becomes a cult object among connoisseurs and enthusiasts. As co-founder and long-standing managing director of Bodegas Aalto in the Ribera del Duero, whose wines are now among the most sought-after on the Iberian Peninsula, Javier Zaccagnini was able to help initiate and experience precisely this. He first tried his hand at winemaking on the side but then the day came when he wanted to know exactly what he was doing, so he founded Solo Sei Bodegas Y Vinedos, with a few parcels near La Horra with vines that are between 60 and 100 years old. When working in the vineyard and during vinification in the cellar, Javier Zaccagnini takes meticulous care to intervene as little as possible, allowing nature to do the real work, which should also be reflected in the taste of the wine. From the harvest to the bottle, all work is carried out by hand in order to treat the must and wine as gently as possible. The wine is allowed to mature for around 18 months in used barriques to ensure that the character of the wine is not masked or drowned out by an oversized wood tone. Javier Zaccagnini's aim is to produce wines that are rich in finesse, elegant and Burgundian in style in a region that is not without reason known for its powerful wines, but which nevertheless reflect the terroir of the region. That he succeeds in this convincingly, even masterfully, is attested to often enough by the critics, who give his work top marks. And the name of the bodega was aptly chosen by Zaccagnini, a fan of classical music, as "Sei Solo" comes from the beginning of a work by Johann Sebastian Bach.
