With 2.7 hectares of vineyards, Weingut Studert-Prüm is a winery that would have a good chance of being honoured as a "garage estate" in other regions. Although this is not true, of course, as Michael Studert would have to be much, much more aggressive with his prices. But he doesn't want that at all: his aim is to press excellent Rieslings at this traditional estate. He offers them - and this is definitely worth mentioning - at attractive prices. We were particularly taken with the wonderfully flavoursome late harvest from the Sonnenuhr - a real price/enjoyment miracle.

If Weingut Studert-Prüm were located in Bordeaux, it might well be referred to as a ‘garagiste’ or ‘micro-château’ and enjoy some sort of cult status. In the Mosel region, however, things are a little more staid –this, however, does not alter the fact that Michael Studert simply makes excellent Riesling from his three hectares of vines. His family – of which he is the 14th generation – can trace its winemaking tradition back to 1581. Across his site portfolio of Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Bernkasteler Graben and Wehlener Nonnenberg he has crafted a most balanced range of wines, from dry to nobly sweet.
