Inspiriert von einem Besuch in Bordeaux, produzierte Dan Duckhorn 1978 den ersten Jahrgang von Duckhorn Vineyards Napa Valley Merlot. Dieser Wein, der die Weinberge und Top-Lagen des Napa Valleys hervorhebt, spiegelt die Vielfalt der diversen Appellationen des Tals wider. Die Cuvée mit einem kleinen Anteil Cabernet Sauvignon verleiht ihm eine bemerkenswerte Tiefe und Struktur sowie Merlot charakteristische Aromen von Schwarzkirsche, Pflaume und Gewürzen. In der Nase offenbart er lebendige Aromen von roten Johannisbeeren, reifen Pflaumen, schwarzen Himbeeren, Kirsche und süsslichen Backgewürzen, unterstrichen mit Noten von Teeblättern und Kakao. Am Gaumen reichhaltig, mit seidigen Tanninen und Aromen von reifen roten Beeren, gebackenem Kuchen und Feigenkompott, die in einem eleganten Finale enden.
