Happiness in an unprecedented time

Finland is known for its outstanding public school system, good healthcare and egalitarian culture. That Finland kept its title during the pandemic is no surprise to international media. The New York Times states that Finns consider themselves as melancholic and reserved – both traits meant that they had mastered social distancing long before the pandemic. When coronavirus restrictions were introduced, requiring people to keep two metres apart from others, jokes in Finland started circulating: “Why can’t we stick to the usual four meters?”

What factors explain happiness?

Here are the main factors that the Happiness Report measures to gauge each country’s happiness level:

  • GDP per capita
  • Healthy life expectancy
  • Available social support
  • The degree of freedom to make decisions about one’s life
  • Generosity within society
  • The absence of corruption.

In countries where the above six factors score highly, people are likely to have higher degrees of reported happiness.
