From brunch and hiking to the hottest stores in town: the stylish podcasters reveal their favorite places in and around Los Angeles.
Mit ihrem Instagram account @everyoutfitonSATC (a sharp-tongued homage to the cult series Sex and the City) und dem dazugehörigen Podcast Every outfit (eine ungefilterte Analyse zeitgenössischer Popkultur) erreichen Social-Media-Consultant und Designerin Chelsea Fairless und Autorin und Regisseurin Lauren Garroni ein Publikum von knapp 750.000 Followern. Mittlerweile leben die beiden jedoch nicht mehr wie zu Studienzeiten in New York, sondern haben das sonnige Los Angeles als ihre Heimat gewählt. Im Interview mit Falstaff TRAVEL verraten die stylischen “Angelinos”, wo sie am liebsten brunchen, shoppen und sich einen Koffeinkick holen.
You both lived in New York for some time - why did you decide to move to L.A.? What do you love most about the city?
Chelsea Fairless: I moved to LA because after a decade of living in New York, I was exhausted and I needed a change of scenery. A lot of people think that L.A. is cheesy, but I’ve always loved the look of it: the palm trees, the mid-century architecture, the deco stuff. I even love the seedier parts, like the old lingerie stores and the dive bars on Sunset Boulevard.
Lauren Garroni: Well, my parents moved here when I was two, so I didn’t technically have a choice, but I love it here. There's a quote attributed to Dorothy Parker where she called Los Angeles “72 suburbs in search of a city.” I think that's the best way to describe it – it’s everything and nothing at the same time.
What's the vibe? What makes L.A. special?
CF: Oh, it shifts dramatically depending on what neighborhood you’re in. Downtown L.A. and Hollywood and Beverly Hills couldn't be more different. But that’s what makes the city special.
LG: Dorothy Parker nannte die Stadt einmal “eine Sammlung von 72 Vorstädten”, und das beschreibt es, wie ich finde, ganz gut.
Where do you like to spend your weekends?
CF: Da fahre ich meistens nach West Hollywood zum Brunch bei “Bottega Louie” und gehe dann mit meinem Hund im West Hollywood Hundepark spazieren. Ich liebe auch einen Nachmittagscocktail in einer der lokalen Gay Bars, entweder “The Abbey” oder “Hi Tops”.
LG: I live by Runyon Canyon, which can be a scene on the weekends, so if I feel like people watching – I’ll go there. Or a walk around Lake Hollywood.
What are the best places that tourists typically wouldn’t know? Where do locals hang out?
CF: Ich liebe das “Glen Centre” mit seinen süßen Shops und Restaurants.
LG: I’m a Valley girl and in recent years it's had quite the glow up. I would head down to Ventura Place in Studio City. On Sunday’s there’s a Farmer’s Market where you can always spot a celeb or two ... if that’s your thing.
Where can you get the best coffee in L.A.?
LG: Bei “Coffee Coffee” auf der Fairfax Avenue.
CF: Agreed, but it’s not for the faint of heart if you’re sensitive to caffeine. This definitely isn’t the best coffee, but I will say that the Starbucks on Highland and Willoughby is the most fabulous looking Starbucks in existence. They restored an art deco gas station and it’s just perfect.
What are your favorite restaurants?
CF: “Mr. Chow” und “Pace” sind großartig für’s Abendessen, aber ich liebe auch die vielen Mid-Century Diners, die L.A. zu bieten hat. Lauren und ich lieben beide “Swingers”, das man auch im Film Romy & Michelle sehen kann.
LG: Für Fine Dining empfehle ich “Providence”. Eines der besten italienischen Lokale ist “Angelini Osteria”. Klassischen L.A. Kitsch (und großartiges mexikanisches Essen) gibt’s bei “Casa Vega”.
You both love and know a lot about fashion. Where do you like to shop?
CF: Der “Dries van Noten” Store auf der La Cienega bieten eines der coolsten und einzigartigsten Einkaufserlebnisse in L.A. Ich liebe auch den mehr oder weniger neuen “Marc Jacobs Heaven” Store auf der Fairfax. Meine größte Obsession ist aber “Candle Delirium”, eine West Hollywood Institution, wo es nur Kerzen zu kaufen gibt.
LG: Es gibt keine bessere Mall als “Westfield Century City”. Es findet alles im Freien statt, mit jedem Geschäft, das man sich nur vorstellen kann – und ein paar davon sind bestimmt fake (lacht). “Just One Eye” ist auch ein unvergleichliches Erlebnis. Einer der besten Vintage Stores in L.A. ist “Decades” auf der Melrose Avenue, wo es generell tolle Stores gibt. Hier ist auch der berühmte “Paul Smith” Store mit der pinken Wand, falls man ein Selfie machen möchte.
Where do you take friends that visit from out of town?
CF: Das “LACMA”, das “Hammer”, und das “MOCA” sind tolle Museen, aber ein Wochenendtrip nach Palm Springs macht auch immer Spaß. Am Weg hin kommt man auch bei der “Desert Hills” Outlet Mall vorbei, wo es einen “Balenciaga” und einen “Loewe” Store gibt. Es lohnt sich also.
LG: Definitiv Malibu. Ich fahre meistens raus zum “Malibu Country Mart”, esse bei “Broad Street Oyster” und fahre dann zu einem meiner liebsten “Geheimstrände” El Matador.
What should be on everyone's L.A. bucket list?
CF: Es ist ein Klischee, aber jeder sollte unbedingt das Hollywood Sign sehen. Ein Besuch bei “Musso & Frank”, dem ältesten Restaurant in Hollywood, ist auch empfehlenswert.
LG: Den Pacific Coast Highway entlang fahren, einen “Pink’s” Hot Dog essen, und einen Abstecher beim “The Getty” machen.
