When you open your eyes here in the morning, it takes a few seconds to realize that you are actually no longer dreaming. Because, at the foot of the bed, shoals of fish are already passing by the floor-to-ceiling glass panes. Some of them as fast and busy as if they were on their way to the office. However, others don't let themselves be disturbed by anything. Unperturbed, they approach, realise that there is nothing to see from their point of view, and a few flaps of their fins later they have already disappeared again. The uniquely beautiful spectacle that takes place in front of the Whitsunday Islands in Australia continuously repeats itself throughout the day. As a guest, one does not get tired of watching the shoals of shining fish swimming by again and again in wonderful colours. It is almost impossible to get enough of them.

Auf der im Meer schwimmenden Plattform stehen an Deck sogenannte “Reef Sleeps” zur Verfügung. Dabei handelt es sich um eine Art Schlafkojen unter den Sternen. Noch näher kommt man dem einzigartigen Ökosystem allerdings in einer der beiden “Reefsuites”. Sie liegen 4,5 Meter unter dem Meeresspiegel. Ausgestattet mit einem Doppelbett, einem Badezimmer und allen Annehmlichkeiten, die man von einer Suite erwartet, sind sie die wahre Attraktion. Ohne auch nur einen Fuß ins Wasser zu setzen, erleben die Gäste hier, wofür andere einen Neoprenanzug und eine Taucherausrüstung benötigen. Verpflegung ist übrigens auch inklusive – vorausgesetzt, man vergisst bei dem Ausblick durch die bodentiefen Glasscheiben nicht auf sein Essen.

Das atemberaubende Erlebnis ist exklusiv – die Wartelisten für die beiden Suiten sind entsprechend lang. Doch nicht nur die Wartezeit lohnt sich. Auch die Anreise macht eine Nacht in einer Reefsuite auf jeden Fall wett. Die beginnt nämlich in der Regel in Brisbane. Rund eineinhalb Stunden später findet man sich in Airlie Beach wieder. Von dort trennt einen immer noch ein etwa dreistündiger Bootstrip. Der Tipp, auf jeden Fall nur eine Übernachtungstasche zu packen, ist ein guter, da der Platz sowohl in der kleinen Maschine als auch am Boot und Pontoon begrenzt ist. Kaum erreicht man schließlich die Reefworld, ist die lange Anreise sofort vergessen. Dafür sorgen 1.500 verschiedene Fischarten, die sich in kaleidoskopartigen Formationen immer wieder vor der Glasscheibe bilden.
