"World Happiness Report" 2026: A journey to the happiest people
The new "World Happiness Report" 2026 has just been published. It reveals where in the world people are happiest; another reason to travel to these countries and get to know the happy locals.
Many people know the animated film "Mr. Rossi seeks happiness", in which the aforementioned Mr. Rossi travels through time and around the world with his dog Gastone to find happiness. The new "World Happiness Report" 2026 has just been presented, revealing the countries in which the happiest people live. Falstaff TRAVEL presents the places where travelers find happy people - and certainly happiness.
People in the Nordic countries seem to be particularly satisfied, as the report suggests: They dominate the top five places in the ranking. Surprisingly, a South American country that is already a popular trend destination among travelers rises to fourth place.
Finland in first place
That's why the locals are happy: Finland is number one in the global happiness rankings for the ninth time in a row. On the report's scale, the Nordic country achieves a happiness score of just under eight out of ten possible points. The relaxed lifestyle, the low crime rate, the high standard of living and the natural surroundings are all reasons for this, according to the Finnish newspaper Helsinki Times.
Falstaff TRAVEL travel tips: Helsinki, the capital city on the coast in the south, is definitely worth a visit. Visitors enjoy a concert in the impressive Temppeliaukio rock church, stroll across Senate Square and admire the historic buildings all around before strolling through the lively city center. Modern Scandinavian delicacies of the highest standard await you in the restaurant "Olo", and hotels such as the historic five-star hotel "Kämp" make your stay in Helsinki unforgettable.
2nd place: Iceland
That's why the locals are happy: Iceland improves to second place this year, with 7.54 points. According to the "World Happiness Report", social cohesion is particularly important to people in the country. The Icelandic people are also considered to be very peaceful and there is an extremely low crime rate.
Falstaff TRAVEL travel tips; Iceland is more than adventure and natural wonders: hot springs, volcanoes, geysers and waterfalls such as in Borgarfjörður or on Snæfellsnes are fascinating all year round. In the north, Gunnar Karl Gíslason brings top cuisine to Akureyri with North, while the organic farm Móðir Jörð serves fresh, regional produce. The "Torfhús Retreat" with hot pools, northern lights and Icelandic horses and the Highland Base as a starting point for hikes through the volcanic highlands offer luxury in the middle of the wilderness.
3rd place: Denmark
That's why the locals are happy: the Danes cultivate their tradition of coziness and a relaxed lifestyle in the spirit of "hygge". The country has a happiness score of 7.539 (just below Iceland).
Falstaff TRAVEL travel tips: A picture-book landscape unfolds between wild dunes, endless coastlines and gentle forests. Regional specialties and creative Nordic cuisine make every trip to Denmark a culinary experience. The capital Copenhagen has repeatedly been voted the most liveable city in the world. Visitors can stroll along colorful facades in Nyhavn, discover the creative design district of Vesterbro or admire the modern Axel Towers. Strøget, one of the longest pedestrian zones in Europe, is home to fashion, interior design and delicatessen stores. With Michelin-starred restaurants such as Geranium and Jordnær, visitors can experience Danish cuisine at the highest level.
4th place: Costa Rica
That's why the locals are happy: Costa Rica continues its rise and takes the top spot in the ranking with a happiness score of 7.439. The locals cite a strong democracy, personal freedom, social support, good healthcare and close, cordial relationships as reasons for this - all of which are reflected in the life motto "Pura Vida!".
Falstaff TRAVEL travel tips: The small country remains authentic despite its growing popularity; toucans sing on the balcony, sloths hang relaxed in the trees and the country is considered safe - the "Switzerland of Central America". The capital San José with its historic center invites you to take leisurely strolls, while lush nature begins just a few minutes away. Manuel Antonio National Park combines jungle, beaches and sea in one area, perfect for families and adventurers. Those looking for active experiences can explore volcanoes such as Arenal, surf on beaches such as Santa Teresa or relax in luxury hotels on Tamarindo Beach.
Place 5: Sweden
That's why the locals are happy: in this year's happiness ranking, Sweden scores 7.255 points, putting it in fifth place. Cities such as Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö combine modern city life with a high quality of life, which is clearly reflected in people's satisfaction. Socializing plays a major role here: the daily fika, a coffee break, is an integral part of social interaction.
Falstaff TRAVEL travel tips: Untouched forests, glistening lakes and the tranquil expanse of the north characterize Sweden's unique natural landscape. The Swedish capital Stockholm stretches over 14 islands, connected by numerous bridges, and inspires with a mixture of history and modern lifestyle. Visitors can explore the Riddarholm church or the imposing town hall and stroll through lively shopping streets such as Ströget or Hamngatan. Culinary delights play a major role - from traditional smörgåsbord and fish dishes to innovative cuisine in modern restaurants. If you are looking for nature, you will find it in parks, by the water or on an excursion to nearby castles and gardens.
