The “Lange Weiße”, the German name alluding to the shape of the grape, is a cross between Rieslaner and Silvaner, carried out in Würzburg in 1951 by Hans Breider. In 1971 the Albalonga vine was officially included in the list of grape varieties. However, it did not catch on, which is why only a few hectares in Rheinhessen and the Palatinate remain in production today. It sprouts relatively late and therefore ripens late, so that it also tends to produce good botrytis if the autumn weather is suitable. However, in order to achieve quality, yields must be restricted.
