The Alcañón is an extremely rare grape variety and originally comes from Somontano in the north of Spain. It is often confused with the Macabeo variety, but studies have shown that the two grape varieties are in no way related to each other. In addition to the minimalist stocks in Somontano, the Alcañón also occurs in Aragon. In recent years, producers have become interested in this variety again because it can produce wines with a lot of character. However, the results will only be available for tasting in the near future. Due to the frequent confusion with the Macabeo, precise statements cannot be made about current vineyard areas, but it is assumed that there are around ten to 15 hectares. The grape variety is not known outside of Spain.
This grape variety is also known by the name of:
Alcañón Blanco, Alcanou, Blanco Castellano, Bobal Blanca
