Babic is a red wine variety typical and characteristic of the south of Dalmatia, especially in the vineyards near Šibenik and Primošten. However, Babic is only very distantly related to the red wine variety Babica, which is also native to Croatia, and in this way Babic is also distantly related to the Plavac Mali grape variety. The medium to late maturing variety produces good, consistent yields, but must be kept short. The Babic is particularly susceptible to black and sour rot. At the same time, he places high demands on his location. If the soil is too fertile and deep, the wines are usually quite rustic and simple. However, old vines on poor, stony soils, such as those on the terraces of Primošten, produce good wines with decent ripening and aging potential. Good qualities are also suitable for aging in barriques. The best Babic wines come from Šibenik and Primošten, but the grape variety is also grown further north in Dalmatia. Occurrences outside Croatia are not known.
