Bobal

Red grape variety

Bobal is one of the most widespread red wine varieties in Spain, although it is hardly known by name. This may be because, on the one hand, most of the stocks are found in central and southern Spain, and on the other hand, because Bobal used to be the main ingredient in so-called bulk wines. However, if it matures fully, it can achieve good results that do not have to hide behind other good varieties from the Iberian Peninsula. It is believed to have originated in the Utiel-Requena region. No matter the soil, it sometimes produces enormous yields, which is why conscientious canopy management is required to ensure good quality. The Bobal sprouts late and ripens late, which shouldn't be a problem in warm Spain, especially since it is very heat-resistant anyway. However, it also shows susceptibility to downy mildew and sour rot. There are around 100,000 hectares of Bobal spread across Spain, almost half of which are on the high plateau of Castilla-La Mancha. The best Bobal wines are fresh, rich in extracts, but not powerful, have good acidity and are velvety and supple on the palate. Bobal plays no role outside of Spain.
