Bronner

White grape variety

The Bronner grape variety, which can be compared somewhat with Pinot Blanc, with which it has no family ties, was created in Freiburg in 1975 from a cross between Merzling and the hybrid Geisenheim 6494. The pharmacist and winemaker Johann Philipp Bronner was named the godfather, who also has the credit for importing the St. Laurent and the Blauer Portugieser from Austria to Germany. Bronner has strong growth with good yields and is very resistant to both types of mildew and also to rot, especially the dreaded sour rot. However, the areas it covers are so small that they are hardly recorded statistically. But we know of vineyards in Italy, especially in Trentino and Alto Adige, in Belgium and in Germany. The Bronner wines are rather simple, relatively neutral in fruit and tend to have a rather unpleasant bitter tone if the yield is too high.
