Casetta: The red grape variety comes from Italy. Synonyms are Lambrusco a Foglia Tonda, Lambrusco Casetta and Maranela. Despite seemingly indicating synonyms, it should not be confused with the varieties Enantio (Lambrusco a Foglia Frastagliata) or Foglia Tonda. It is also not related to any of the many Lambrusco varieties. According to a hypothesis, the variety was selected from wild vines. The medium-ripening vine is susceptible to fungal diseases, especially botrytis. It produces alcohol-, tannin- and acid-rich red wines with a variety of aromas of dried plums, maraschino cherries, Cinnamon, tobacco and musk. The variety was previously widespread in Trentino and Veneto. Due to susceptibility to disease, the population declined sharply and the vine was on the verge of extinction in the 1960s. In the 1990s, vines over 100 years old were discovered and reactivation was started with the support of the Viticulture Institute San Michele all'Adige. The variety is approved in the DOC wine Valdadige Terradeiforti. In 2016, 14 hectares were designated (Kym Anderson).
