The grass? is a rather rare white wine variety in Romania, but there it represents a sweet wine style, the Gras? de Cotnari, which is actually the full name of the grape variety. Grass? means something like “fat”. It is controversial whether the variety also occurs in Hungary, as it is also believed to have been found in older Tokaj vintages. The fact is, however, that the grass? feels most comfortable on volcanic soils and its berry skin is very receptive to the noble mushroom Botrytis cinerea. Could grass finally exist? have not yet been clarified on the Hungarian side. At times it was also confused with the Hungarian variety Furmint. Early to medium sprouting, does the grass mature? relatively long and develops thick, very sugar-rich berries. The variety, which is quite susceptible to downy mildew, is somewhat resistant to winter cold and summer warmth as well as drought. In the north-east of Romania there are around 400 hectares in production, and the majority of the harvest is made into the sweet grass. de Cotnari, for which infestation with Botrytis cinerea is necessary. It is much less common to find the variety in a semi-dry and dry style. Since the sweet wines can be very powerful, is the grass? sometimes with varieties like Feteasc? Alb? or Muscat à Petits Grains blended. In Hungary the variety is called Kövérszölö and almost disappeared after the great phylloxera disaster at the end of the 19th century. Is this variety actually the grass? acts, but is uncertain. Only in the last 20 years or so has the Kövérszölö celebrated a small renaissance with a few hectares of cultivated land, including in the Tokaj region, where it is approved for the production of the famous Tokajer. No other occurrences are known.
