Krstac

White grape variety

The white wine variety Krstac is a long-established grape variety in Montenegro with likely origins in the Podgorica region in the south of the country. The name means "cross" and must be understood as a reference to the shape of the grapes. The specialist literature also knows a red variant of Krstac under the name Krstac Crna. However, since this variety is no longer cultivated today, any family relationships between the two varieties are pure speculation. The Krstac sprouts in the middle segment and reaches full maturity late. The thin-skinned berries of the medium-sized to larger grapes are very susceptible to powdery mildew and downy mildew as well as to rot diseases such as black rot or sour rot. The Krstac also places high demands on its location. Only the Plantaze Winery produces a pure Krstac in the Podgorica region, otherwise it finds its way into cuvées.
