Moslavac is a synonym for the well-known Furmit grape variety. The Furmint grape variety is known to only a few people, but many people know the most important wine made from it, as it is one of the best and most famous sweet wines in the world, the Tokaji from northeast Hungary. So it's no wonder that Hungary has by far the largest Furmint vineyard area of all, with almost 4,000 hectares, 97 percent of which is in the Tokaj region alone. Furmint was first mentioned as an integral part of Tokaj in 1796. The variety sprouts early, which makes it susceptible to late frosts, and ripens quite late. Their thin skin offers an excellent target for the noble rot Botrytis cinerea, which occurs in late autumn and is an important prerequisite for the production of high-quality noble sweet wines. The pronounced acidity of Furmint makes these noble sweet wines appear fresh and lively and gives them very pronounced ripeness and aging potential. Furmint is rarely found outside of Hungary. Around 700 hectares are in production in Slovenia, a few on Lake Neusiedl in Austria and a few (but under a different name) in Croatia. Here, Furmint is mostly made dry and produces a fruity, spicy, strong and harmoniously dry wine.
