Pamid

Red grape variety

The Pamidi or Pamid is a typical grape variety of the Balkans, where its origins lie. However, it has not yet been possible to determine exactly which country. The Pamidi is available in different variants or mutations. In some Balkan countries, the white Dimyat grape variety is also called Pamidi, but the two varieties have nothing in common. The small, thin-skinned berries of the Pamidi are particularly susceptible to both powdery mildew and downy mildew, but demonstrate good resistance to putrefactive diseases. The grape variety, which matures in the middle segment, is fertile, vigorous and productive. With 15,000 hectares, Pamidi is the most widespread grape variety in Bulgaria, although not all of the grapes are made into wine; a significant portion of the harvest is sold as table grapes. Pamidi wines are light and should be drunk at a young, fruity stage. Since they are quite uncomplicated, they are very popular in the country. Rosé wine is also made from this grape variety. The best wines are made on hills or mountain foothills with good exposure to the sun. Neighboring Romania also has a larger Pamidi cultivation area, with around 3,000 hectares. It is also found under different names and on a much smaller scale in Serbia, the Republic of Macedonia, Albania, Turkey, Greece and Hungary.
