Ráthay

Red grape variety

The Ráthay is a new creation from 1970 in Klosterneuburg, which, however, never really caught on in Austria. The cross between a Klosterneuburg hybrid vine and the Blauburger was named after Emerich Ráthay, who headed the famous wine-growing school and research institute in the second half of the 19th century. It has been approved for cultivation in Austria since 2000. The variety is relatively hardy and, above all, quite resistant to powdery mildew. The wines of Ráthay are primarily intended for early consumption, although high quality qualities can also be aged in barriques due to their richness in tannins. There are just ten hectares of Ráthay in Austria, mainly in Burgenland; there are no known plantations outside of Austria.

Country of origin: Austria
