Roesler is one of the younger new breeds in Austria. This is a crossing of the Vitis vinifera vine Zweigelt with the hybrid vine Klosterneuburg 1189-9-77, carried out in 1970 at the Klosterneuburg wine-growing school. It was named after the former director of the winegrowing school Leonhard Roesler. Only 137 hectares are productive in Austria. Roesler delivers a deep-colored red wine with a reserved tannin structure that can also be aged well in barriques. Noble sweet wines can also be made from the variety, although it is actually only very rare. Outside of Austria, only one Swiss winemaker has Roesler in its portfolio.
