Alpine splendor in British Columbia
Whistler not only attracts skiers from all over the world in winter - the region also enchants in summer with alpine mountain lakes, luxurious spas and countless outdoor experiences.
The journey there is an experience in itself. Those heading north from Vancouver take the legendary Sea-to-Sky Highway, one of Canada's most beautiful panoramic roads. Sometimes the route winds along fjords, sometimes the view opens up to snow-capped peaks and deep green forests. It's worth stopping for a moment along the way: at Shannon Falls, whose spray plunges into the depths like a sparkling veil, or in Squamish, nestled between steep rock faces and the glittering Howe Sound.
Squamish has long been known as Canada's "outdoor capital". Climbers plunge into the vertical on the mighty granite monolith Stawamus Chief, mountain bikers whizz across a network of trails, windsurfers and kitesurfers glide across the fjord. Those who prefer a quieter experience can take the "Sea to Sky Gondola", which lets guests float high above the water and opens up panoramas that look like they have been painted.
But Squamish is more than just adventure. The name goes back to the Sḵwx̱wú7meshnation - the "people of the holy water". Totem poles, handicrafts and guided tours combine nature, spirituality and the knowledge of the First Nations.
The further the road climbs, the more alpine the landscape becomes. Turquoise mountain lakes glisten between coniferous forests, eagles circle above the valleys - and Whistler, world-famous and majestic, appears on the horizon.
Ski resort of superlatives
The once sleepy mountain village, situated at 670 meters, was opened up to skiers in the 1960s. Today, Whistler is considered one of the largest winter sports resorts in North America - with an altitude difference of 1,530 meters. Three glaciers ensure around 200 days of skiing a year, and the Olympic atmosphere of 2010 is still palpable: perfectly groomed slopes, modern infrastructure, cosmopolitan flair. It takes weeks to discover the largest ski area in North America. Or a guide.
Two mountains - Whistler and Blackcomb - are connected by the "Peak 2 Peak Gondola" in just twelve minutes. With a span of more than three kilometers, it is the longest and highest free-floating cable car in the world. In the glass cabins, you float up to 436 meters above forests, lakes and peaks - an experience for those with a head for heights and a panorama that takes your breath away. For experts and adrenaline lovers, heli-skiing also offers a bird's eye view of the wilderness - exclusive and unforgettable.
Whistler is a year-round destination; in summer, hiking, golf and, above all, mountain biking are on offer. The Whistler Mountain Bike Park is a mecca for adrenaline junkies with trails of all levels of difficulty - from gentle descents to daring downhill routes. Turquoise lakes invite you to swim and paddle, while hiking trails such as the High Note Trail offer views of glaciers and flower meadows. In the fall a golden veil covers the forests, while luxurious spas, lodges and hot tubs promise relaxation.
Wellness in the woods
After days full of exercise and adventure, relaxation awaits: the "Scandinave Spa Whistler", located just outside the town center, offers complete peace and quiet. Steam and sauna baths alternate with hot and ice-cold outdoor pools nestled in dense forests. In winter, when snow lies on the branches and steam rises above the pools, an almost fairy-tale atmosphere is created. Thanks to the strict "silent policy", the only accompaniment is the rustling of the trees and the splashing of the pools - luxury in its quietest form.
Cosmopolitan mountain resort
Despite its size, Whistler retains an almost European flair. Boutique hotels line the streets, gourmet restaurants interpret local cuisine in a modern way, and art galleries, stores and the lively après-ski scene provide urban variety. Anyone who stays here quickly realizes that luxury is not about pomp, but about experience, amazement and enjoyment - especially when it comes to cuisine.
The gastronomy has long enjoyed an international reputation. The "Araxi" in the heart of the village is legendary - an institution for decades, famous for its outstanding Oyster Bar and award-winning wine list. Contemporary elegance is embodied by the "Wild Blue Restaurant + Bar", which combines a modern interpretation of Pacific cuisine with elegant Alpine flair and has quickly established itself as a hotspot for gourmets. And for an enjoyable start to the day, the "Provisions", where artisan bread, delicious croissants and regional products showcase the relaxed side of Whistler's culinary scene, is a modern boutique café with an espresso bar.
A trip to Whistler is more than just a trip to the mountains. It is a journey through breathtaking landscapes, an interplay of nature, sport and culinary delights - a journey that effortlessly combines adventure, relaxation and exclusive experiences.
