Brazilian lemonade: why it's so popular and how to make it yourself
A social media sensation last year, this exotic refreshment is now back in our feeds with a vengeance. Falstaff has the perfect recipe.
On particularly hot days, it is important to stay hydrated – preferably with water, unsweetened iced tea or electrolyte drinks. But variety is a key part of refreshment: In addition to the numerous agua frescas currently appearing on TikTok and the like, another thirst quencher is also conquering our feeds this summer. We're talking about Brazilian Lemonade, a creamy, fresh classic with a tropical flair which has returned once again after winning us over last year. So what makes this lemonade variation so popular? Is it its freshness, creamy consistency – or perhaps its combination of tart and sweet?
Contrary to what the name suggests, it is not made with lemons, but with fresh limes – and what makes it special is the addition of condensed milk as a sweetener, which gives it its unique, velvety flavor. Originally from Brazil, it has long since become a viral hit and therefore also provides tropical flair all around the world. Perfect for hot days, barbecues or simply as a quick cool-down.
Once upon a lime
Even if its exact origin are a bit murky – according to legend, it was invented by a street vendor in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais – one thing is certain: limes are the star player here, giving Brazilian Lemonade its unmistakably fresh taste. The drink itself is rooted in traditional Brazilian recipes that have been passed down over generations, modified and reinterpreted time and again.
Today, it is much more than just a refreshing drink - it is a symbol of Brazilian hospitality and is often served at celebrations, family gatherings and get-togethers. No wonder it has long since achieved cult status and found its way into glasses worldwide. Its popularity on social media is no surprise, either: the strong color of the limes in combination with the cloudy condensed milk creates an imposing effect.
