In love with food: taste bliss in Singapore
Between gleaming skyscrapers, sparkling clean parks and boulevards, culinary delights are bubbling at every corner in Singapore: this unique food culture is supported by a cosmopolitan society and a passion for pleasure that knows no bounds.
Glittering skyscrapers, sparkling clean streets, manicured parks, and in between bustling food halls full of cookshops, the so-called hawker centers; for visitors, food is one of the main attractions in Singapore.
Mix of cultures and cuisines
On the one hand, the high quality of the local cuisine can be explained by the mix of inhabitants: in addition to the majority of ethnic Chinese, there are also significant Indian, Malay and Arab minorities. On the other hand, it is the impressive economic growth that is attracting more and more chefs from Europe, America, Australia and Asia to try their luck here.
Gourmet cuisine meets 1A street food
And often with great success, including Australian David Pynt, whose "Burnt Ends", a kind of Australian barbecue restaurant, is one of the best-booked restaurants in the city. For an authentic Indian meal, we recommend the over 100-year-old Zam Zam with its fish head curry, one of Singapore's iconic dishes. Almost as long-established is "Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle", a simple food stall in a hawker center. The specialty here is the stunning Bak Chor Mee, a noodle pot with pork and mushrooms, the national dish of the food-loving city state.
MUST-EATS AND MUST-DOS
- Hawker and breakfast: kaya toast, soft eggs and kopi at Tiong Bahru Market or the Old Airport Road Food Center.
- Zi Char: order chili or black pepper crab from one of the cookshops - with mantou for dipping.
- Peranakan and Joo Chiat: Laksa, Otak-Otak and colorful Kueh in Joo Chiat/Katong; stroll through shophouses, choose small stores, share several snacks.
