Insider tips: Switzerland's most beautiful mountain lakes
You can see the mountain peaks reflected in the lake, take a dive into the icy blue – and for a moment, time stands still. Swiss mountain lakes are the perfect retreat on hot days. We’ll show you the most beautiful ones – and share a few well-kept secrets.
Mountain lakes are among the most impressive natural wonders in Switzerland - and are popular excursion destinations, especially in summer. Whether hiking, swimming or taking photos: These lakes offer unforgettable experiences for the next sunny days in the Swiss Alps.
Oberblegi Lake (Glarus)
This little-visited lake at the foot of the Glärnisch massif is only about an hour and a half's walk from Luchsingen and 2.5 hours from Braunwald (without much difference in altitude). The view of the surrounding limestone mountains is dramatic - and if you're brave enough, you can jump into the ice-cold lake. An ideal insider tip for hot days and moderate hiking adventures.
Talalpsee (Glarus)
A 20-minute cable car ride and a half-hour walk from Filzbach you'll find the Talalpsee - nestled between green hills and dramatic rock faces. It is easy to reach, pleasantly quiet and perfect for a relaxing day trip with a picnic (optionally at one of the two fire pits), swimming and a rustic pub . The descent can also be made with a rented Trotinett.
Wildsee (Pizol)
As the centerpiece of the five-lake hike on the Pizol, the turquoise Wildsee is not for the faint-hearted - but the view of the emerald-green water in front of snow-covered peaks makes up for everything. Here, you'll behold a high alpine backdrop like a painting - and the absolute highlight of this legendary day hike. At the end of the hike, a cozy mountain restaurant awaits all thirsty and hungry travelers.
Lai da Palpuogna (Grisons)
This quiet, almost mystical lake near Preda was once voted the most beautiful spot in Switzerland – and it’s easy to see why: when the larches and mountain peaks reflect in the crystal-clear water, a reverent silence settles in. It’s an ideal place for a meditative walk or a peaceful break along the Albula route. Popular hiking options include the Parc Ela loop from Bever, the trail from Preda to Lake Palpuogna, or the more challenging seven-hour hike from Preda over the Igl Compass to the lake and back.
Lagh da Saoseo (Grisons)
A picture-perfect lake straight out of a Studio Ghibli film: Lagh da Saoseo, tucked away in Val da Camp at over 2,000 meters, enchants visitors with its vibrant blue water, gnarled Swiss stone pines, and an almost surreal sense of calm. Getting there takes time – but it’s worth every minute. Tip: Start early – it’s a popular spot.
Lago Tremorgio (Ticino)
Normally, the cable car from Rodi-Fiesso (note: currently closed for renovations, expected to reopen by September 2025) takes you straight to the shores of Lago Tremorgio – an alpine lake with a panoramic restaurant, sweeping views, and turquoise-green water. Fortunately, the hike up only takes about 35 minutes. Walking around the lake takes roughly 40 minutes and is family-friendly. For those looking for more adventure, the trail continues on to more remote mountain lakes.
Lago Morghirolo (Ticino)
While the Tremorgio is well-known, the Lago di Morghirolo remains mostly lonely. The moderately difficult hike from the Capanna Campo Tencia leads to this quiet, secluded gem at 2,260 meters. Without gastronomy, without tourists - but with marmots, silence and a clear view as far south as the eye can see.
Seealpsee (Appenzell)
Perhaps the most accessible of the large mountain lakes: Seealpsee can be reached on foot from Wasserauen station in under an hour. In return, there are spectacular mirror images, fresh milk on the alp and a beautiful mountain inn. It's an ideal opportunity to get to know the fascination of the Eastern Swiss Pre-Alps.
Lake Oeschinen (Bern)
It's no longer an insider tip, but Lake Oeschinen remains a must-see: with its perfect location below the Blüemlisalp peaks, the intense blue and the boat hire, it offers everything for a perfect summer's day. Ideal for hikes, day trips - or cooling off with a view. The high-altitude hikes around the lake are particularly rewarding. They open up spectacular panoramas and make the scenery look even more impressive from a bird's eye view.
