The best wines from Crna Gora

Montenegro

Viticulture has been practiced in Montenegro probably since the 4th century BC, at least findings of tools and amphorae suggest this. For many centuries wine was produced here, until under the rule of the Turks almost all vineyards were destroyed. After the liberation, they were immediately re-cultivated. In international comparison, viticulture in Montenegro plays only a minor role. Just 4,000 hectares are under vine in a country that is not even 14,000 square kilometres in size, but has a lot to offer in terms of landscape. The Bay of Kotor, for example, was a popular destination for those who would today be called members of the jet set until well into the 20th century. Most of the vineyards are located on the Adriatic coast, or at least are clearly influenced by the climate of the sea, which is not far away. The climate is Mediterranean, with warm summers and mild winters. The most important grape variety is the red wine variety Vranac, which occupies almost two thirds of the vineyard area. In addition to other grape varieties native only to the Balkan states, international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot or Grenache are also growing in the vineyards. About half of Montenegro's vineyard area is cultivated by a single winery, the AD Plantaze winery. In addition to numerous small family wineries, there are three larger wineries. The most important wine growing area is the Podgorica region, named after Montenegro's capital of the same name.
