It was clear that vines would have to grow here again. The Herrenhof is an old former estate of Vorau Abbey located in Markt Hartmannsdorf. The canons (hence the name Herrenhof) have always appreciated the Buchertberg location in the hilly volcanic landscape. The Lamprecht family acquired this property in 1913. Due to several changes of ownership, viticulture came to a complete standstill. In 2006, vines were planted again on this first-class, south-facing site under organic guidelines.
The assortment is small, but very well suited to the land and soil. The soils are predominantly very light and consist of calcareous sandstone, silt and gravel. Pinot Blanc, Furmint, a very diverse Gemischter Satz and Pinot Noir are the dominant grape varieties. Furmint, formerly known as "Mosler", has been brought back to Styria. The winegrower's specialty is a traditional Styrian Gemischter Satz, the "Buchertberg Weiss", vinified with over 100 grape varieties, some of which are rare, historic and therefore ancient. The idea behind this is to press a genuine terroir wine that is not defined by a grape variety, but by its provenance.
Pinot Noir and a little Blaufränkisch celebrate the red wine ageing potential of Styria. The wines are all matured 100% in wooden barrels, almost half of which are made from oak from the estate's own forest. The wines are matured slowly, with no unnecessary interventions, "because this is the only way to create wines that make their provenance tangible," says Gottfried Lamprecht.
