Steffen Burnikel is a name to remember: The 31-year-old runs the organic wine estate in Niederkirchen, which was founded in 1987 and has 23 hectares of vines. These include such renowned vineyards as the Deidesheimer Kieselberg and Herrgottsacker. "Speed, finishing straight and podium finishes are not so important to us," says the winemaker, who labels his single-vineyard wines with a turtle to symbolise endurance, longevity and perhaps a little wisdom. A remarkable debut, we nominate him as a candidate for "Newcomer of the Year" (see also p. ...).
