Only a few wineries have the privilege of having an entire street named after them—and in a major city, no less. In that sense, the Muth Winery is a Viennese institution. Its vineyards are located exclusively on Vienna’s Nussberg and are among the city’s finest sites.
After 18 years of building up the Mayer Winery on Pfarrplatz, Gerhard J. Lobner, together with his two children, Benita Sophie and Josef, not only to the family winery in Mannersdorf an der March but also to the historic Muth Winery in Vienna-Döbling (19th district), which the family was able to lease shortly before the start of the 2025 harvest. Vienna and the Weinviertel—a combination that the whole family lives and cherishes deeply: on the one hand, the tranquil river landscape along the March in the southern Weinviertel, whose wines are shaped by the river’s microclimate and the loess soils. On the other hand, there’s viticulture in the big city, where the Danube and the limestone soils characterize the wines from the Nussberg.
For Benita, Josef, and Gerhard, being able to live and work in both of these worlds is a privilege they deeply appreciate. Of course, the Viennese “Gemischter Satz” plays a decisive role here. But in keeping with the Lobner family’s philosophy, Riesling dominates in terms of vineyard area—the great passion of Benita, Josef, and Gerhard.
