Josef Jamek - a name that stands for the Wachau cultural landscape and the renaissance of Austrian wine culture like no other. As early as the 1950s, he shaped the type of Wachau white wine with his natural dry wines and his ideas were the inspiration for the founding of "Vinea Wachau", the protective association for the wines of this magnificent landscape.
With a vineyard area of 25 hectares, the winery is one of the most impressive private estates and cultivates vineyards in the very best primary rock terraces in the Wachau. The Klaus vineyard, a synonym for Jamek's wine culture, is located on a steep slope with over a hundred stone terraces. Jamek's model for Wachau Riesling has been produced here for decades. The Jamek family has been bottling this wine jewel since 1959, which can be seen as a parable of Josef Jamek's great life's work. The primary rock terraces of the Achleiten and Liebenberg vineyards are also known for their top-class Grüner Veltliners, which are characterised by the Wachau terroir. The Hochrain and Zweikreuzgarten vineyards in Wösendorf have been cultivated in cooperation with the Benedictine Abbey of Melk for over 50 years. Pinot Blanc and Grüner Veltliner of the highest quality grow here.
The tradition of the winery has been continued by Jamek's granddaughter Julia Jamek and her husband Herwig since 2012. Both are trained doctors and therefore guarantee the wholesomeness of the wines. The wines are best tasted in the estate's own restaurant, which is run by Johannes Altmann, another grandson of Josef and Edeltraud Jamek. In the dignified atmosphere of the over 100-year-old house with its unique garden, you can enjoy excellent regional cuisine and wines - making a visit to Jamek-Altmann an incomparable experience for every visitor to Wachau.
