The red wine Pioneer Block Cabernet Merlot, vintage 2018 from the winery Saint Clair Estate has been rated in 2021 by Anne Krebiehl MW with 94 Falstaff points. It is a wine made from the grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec from the region Hawkes Bay in New Zealand.
Buttermilk, smoke, pencil, cedar and plum amalgamate on the nose into a lifted fragrance that suggests power and elegance in equal measure. The palate keeps this promise but turns the power into sheer pleasure with sumptuous plum fruit. The tannins are of fine velvet and provide a fitting backdrop for such finely captured, aromatic fruit. Drink by 2040.
