Zurich's Florhof Hotel Gets a Lalique Style Makeover

Entrepreneurs Peter Spuhler and Silvio Denz are taking over the traditional Florhof hotel in Zurich and want to reopen it as Villa Florhof in the Lalique style in 2024.

Swiss wine entrepreneur Peter Spuhler is teaming up with Silvio Denz, the CEO of Lalique Group, to aquire Hotel Florhof in Zurich. Spuhler already runs four luxury properties – Villa René Lalique and Château Hochberg by Lalique in Wingen-sur-Moder in northeastern France,  Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey in Bordeaux and The Glenturret Lalique Restaurant in Crieff, Scotland. Denz also owns several wineries in Bordeaux.

Florhof, located between the old town and university quarter in Switzerland's most populous city, has been considered a jewel among Zurich's city hotels for more than 100 years. The aquisition ensures the hotel-restaurant's continuation after its previous owners, a family who held it for nearly a century, announced it would cease operating in July 2022.

"You don't find the best properties, they find you. The charming Florhof in this imposing building has fascinated me for some time, and now the opportunity has arisen to buy it," says Silvio Denz. "We are very much looking forward to continuing Villa Florhof as a hotel-restaurant for the people of Zurich and visitors from all over the world, combining the history of the city with the flair of Lalique."

Over the coming months, the house will be extensively renovated and redesigned in the Lalique style. In addition to a top restaurant and bar complete with terrace, lounge and fumoir, a reduced number of 15 suites and hotel rooms are planned. The historic vaulted wine cellar will continue to form the foundation of Florhof. "In this dream property, we want to create a unique ambience for our guests that combines tradition with the future and meets all the demands of upscale hospitality," says Spuhler.
